Summer 2011
The "Experience Christendom" Summer Program
Dates To Be Announced
For
students who will be entering their senior year in the fall of 2011.
Below is a group interview conducted by Director of Admissions, Tom McFadden, with the 38 "campers" who took part in the seconde session of the 2010 "Experience Christendom" Summer Program.
Education should
lead the mind to its ultimate purpose: to know and appreciate the truth.
The Liberal Arts serve in cultivating the intellect, which is necessary
in the search for truth. In the courses on Theology, Philosophy, History,
and Literature, students will strive to answer key questions in those
disciplines, such as:
What is the relationship
between faith and reason?
What is the good
and why must we choose it?
In what ways
do noble characters in literature convey transcendent truths by their
actions?
Can one man make
a difference in the world?
Mass, Benediction,
Rosary, and Confession available daily.
The Courses
All courses are taught by full-time faculty of Christendom College.
Scripture Study
College President Dr. Timothy O'Donnell leads the students in a thorough study of one of the four Gospels, giving great insights into deep theological questions.
Ethics
What is good and what is evil? Why must we choose the good? This study
will elucidate the natural forms for the morality of human behavior, using
the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas.
The
Moral Imagination in Literature
This course will focus on the theme of men and women faced with the need
to make moral choices, often in difficult and agonizing situations. The
students will read and discuss a series of short poems, plays, and stories
which dramatize this theme in various contexts and settings: ancient and
modern; political and social; scientific and religious. Several noteworthy
films, likewise dealing with the importance of making sound moral choices,
will also be viewed and discussed.
The
West and Christianity
This course will provide students with an introduction to the glorious achievements of the West, and to the role of Christianity therein. From the Greeks and Romans, who laid the foundations for Christian culture, to the Franks, Byzantines, and Crusaders, who defended it, students will be come to understand the triumphs of their cultural and religious forbears, while deepening their own Christian identity.
Activities
Not only will students enjoy the pastoral tranquility of the Christendom
campus, they will also paddle down the glorious Shenandoah and explore
beautiful Blue Ridge mountain trails. There also will be time for pick-up volleyball
and basketball games, as well as opportunities to fly out into the Shenandoah River on the ropeswing! Swing Dancing, Contra-Dancing, Talent Shows, Dinner at faculty houses, as well, as sing-a-longs will make it a truly wonderful time.
Expenses: $500, includes tuition, room and board,
books and activity fees.
