Welcome
to Christendom's Alumni E-Zine. If you have information that
you would like to share with your fellow alumni, send it to
Tom McFadden at tmcfadden@christendom.edu.
The
Grapevine Online will be uploaded, depending on the amount
of information sent to the editor, every month. It will have
a couple of sections (when information is available), namely,
Class Notes (your basic information on alumni babies,
weddings, jobs, etc.), Calendar of Events, and Links
to various recent stories about Christendom College and/or
the Alumni of Christendom.
Of
course, all comments, suggestions, and information should
be sent to tmcfadden@christendom.edu.

Michael
and Alyssa Hichborn are
celebrating the recent birth of their fist child. Brendan
Xavier Hichborn was received into this world on the 25th of
May, the feast of Pope St. Gregory the VII. He weighed in
at 7 lbs. 2.2 oz at a length of 20 in. Both mom and baby are
doing very well, especially since Brendan is such a good baby.
He has a LOT of hair (including on his shoulders and back),
he really only cries when he is being changed, and his neck
muscles are amazingly strong and well developed. Just hours
after he was born, I laid him on my chest. He didn't seem
to like the position he was in, so he did a full push-up with
his arms, raised his head to look at me, turned to look the
other way and laid back down. Other than daily calisthenics,
he sleeps, eats, and smiles all the time.
This
Summer Marc-Pierre Jansen ('02) once again will be
traveling the world, this time, to Bavaria with the International
Institute of Culture. Get a job!
Mary
McFadden ('98) is engaged to be married to Jonathan Brand,
graduate of UVA and history teacher at the American School
in Switzerland. The wedding will be on October 25th at St.
John's Church in McLean, Virginia.
Speaking
of McFaddens, although they will be loosing one to the name
of Brand come October 25, they will be gaining another one
in the Tom - seen to the left with his pal, Rick Santorum
- ('90 & '98) and Amanda (Farinholt) McFadden clan
sometime right around the same time. That will make six for
the McFaddens, although they are still very far behind in
"the race" to win all races. (I think that Bob
and Amy Hambleton might have that covered with 16, as
of mid-May!)
This
comes to us from Anne Brewster Reagan '00, whose husband,
Matt Reagan '00, is in the Middle East: "I got
several emails from Matt as well as an early wake-up call
this week. I got to talk with him for about 20 minutes. He
is doing well, but very homesick! He just got his platoon
with Charlie Company, so he moved another 100 miles south
to be with them. When he was with Alpha, they had just gotten
internet access, so he doesn't know what the conditions will
be with Charlie. If anyone wants to try emailing him, he might
be able to check it in a week or so. His address is: reagan02@mail.jobe.net.
The change in his mailing address is just from A Co. to C
Co. on the second line.
LT Reagan, Matthew
C Company 5th Engineer Battalion 92603
APO AE 09323-2603
He said that mail, pictures, and packages are what keep him
going, and thanks to all of you who have been keeping in touch
with him. The prayers are wonderful as well! Hopefully he
will be home soon! God bless."
Another
Arlington seminarian and Bjorn (aka Bernardo) Lundberg
will join 14 other seminarians to study Spanish in Mexico
this summer. They leave Dulles on Saturday, June 7 for Mexico.
Once they arrive, it is then by bus to Queretaro, which is
three hours north of Mexico City. Two months later, they return
in August, fluent, (thirsty for watere) and ready to take
on the mega Churches for the future of Hispanic Catholics
in the U.S. Hasta luego! Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for them!

The
above link has photos from April, when Laura Byrne ('02),
Kristin Starcher ('02), and Kristina Hayles ('02)
went to Southern California for Easter vacation, and from
Memorial Day Weekend in Chicago, when they went to Heather
Lowe's ('98-'02) and Jerome Allen's wedding in Herscher,
IL, May 24.
Claire
Jensen ('03) has been accepted for an 8 week editorial
internship at the Metropolitan Opera Guild, which started
this past Monday. You go girl!
Br
Victor Shoemaker (Victor Shoemaker, class of 83) will
be ordained a priest for the Community of St John on June
28, the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The ordination
will take place in France. Other CC alumni who are priests
in the Community are Fr Joseph Mary Brown (Joe Brown, class
of 85) who is Prior of the Brothers English-speaking Novitiate
House in Princeville, Il; and Fr Marianus Hough (Jeff Hough
92?) who is presently in Pondichery India. Also, Sr
Mary Lazarus (Elizabeth Hibil class of 99) is completing
her Novitiate year with the Srs of St John in France.
Caroline
Pollock ('03) is proud to announce that she is currently
waitressing at Legal Sea Foods in Tysons II in McLean, VA,
and bringing in mad cash. But she doesn't stop there. She
continues to say that she will be enrolling in graduate school
(NDGS) beginning June 23. She also does a little free lance
writing here and there and is trying to get published. Busy,
busy girl.

at Christendom College:

Reverend
Mr. Michael J. Ruddick will be ordained to the priesthood
on Saturday June 7th, and will celebrate his first mass on
Sunday June 8th. Also, a prayer request from Michael McFadden:
He is taking his PhD qualifier (aka: comprehensive) exam on
Monday, June 9th, from 9 AM to 2 PM, and he says he needs
as much help from above as the Christendom Ghetto can summon.
If all goes well, he promises to subsequently reintroduce
himself to the friends he has been neglecting while preparing
for this exam over the past year. If all doesn't go well,
he'll see them all next year after he retakes it.
The
picture on the right has nothing to do with any of the above
mentioned stories. It is simply a picture, a beautiful picture,
of Christina (4), Bernadette (3), Dominic (2), and Damian
(3 months) Smith, of the Guy and Mary Kate (Jensen) Smith
Clan.
New
Associate of Arts graduate Meg McNeely '03 moved for
the fourth time in a year and a half, ending up back where
she started, in the basement of Doug and Nancy Briggs'
house.
Bethany
Sargis, Theresa Fer, and Alyssa Lombardi (all '03) will
be teaching at St. Louis Catholic School in Alexandria, VA,
under the direction of Fr. Jack Riley.
Kate
McGlynn '03 is now working for the Heritage Foundation
in Database Administration.
And
a number of the Class of 2002/03 have recently (or will soon
be) enrolled in the Education of Lifelong Learning Program
(Marriage): Tim Coffey '02 and Leah Stephens '03 (June
7), Theresa Ford '03 and Ben Fisher (May 31), Clint
Hepler '03 and Andria Thornbrugh '03 (June 21), Jan
Kuznia '03 and Matt Akers '03 (August 16), Rebecca
Price '03 and Joe O'Herron (May 24).
And
finally, an "interesting" little update on one Pearse
Marschner '02:
In
the name of God, the Benificent, the Merciful. Pearse Marschner
has been residing for some 5 weeks now at The Republican
Guard Palace in Baghdad. He lives, because no one has kicked
him out yet, in the VIP guest house by the pool. He plays
bluegrass with his feet up on Sadaam's coffee table every
single night. He cantors and plays classical guitar for Mass
in a room decorated all-around with phrases from the Koran
that features a huge mural of SCUD missles across from a huge
picture of Jerusalem. Ite, Missle est. He plays his part as
a PA officer covering Humanitarian Affairs and he acts, in
his spare time, as the Defense Department liason to the office
of Naval Contemplation.

Christendom
Grads Pursue Higher Degrees
This
fall, a number of graduates will begin the higher studies
for which their Christendom education is so fine a preparation.
They thus join the ever-growing group of College alumni who
have attained or are pursuing masters degrees or doctorates
in the humanities, sciences, and the law.
Raymond
Hain 02 will leave his post in the Christendom Admissions
Office and go West. Hain, who earned nearly perfect scores
on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), received a full tuition
scholarship and living stipend from the Philosophy Department
of the University of Notre Dame, where he will pursue his
PhD.
Donald
Goodman 03 also considered settling in South Bend
as he made the difficult choice between offers of admission
from Notre Dame Law School, where he won a significant tuition
scholarship, and the College of William and Mary Law School
in Virginia. As he intends to practice in Virginia, he eventually
chose William and Mary. This summer he will intern with the
Virginia Attorney Generals Office in preparation for
the legal studies on which he will embark in August.
Several
other members of the Class of 2003 also plan to become attorneys.
Justin Smith won Oklahoma City University Law Schools
Hatton W. Sumners Scolarship, which includes tuition, books,
fees, and a $5000 per year living stipend. Smith will concentrate
in constitutional law. Paul Jalsevac will join twelve
Christendom alumni already studying there when he enters Ave
Maria Law School this fall. And Laura Henderson has
chosen to attend the Catholic University of America School
of Law.
This
interesting and engaged class produced many scholars. Fred
Fraser, who spent last summer in Fr. Reginald Fosters
peripatetic Latin course in Rome, will begin graduate work
in Classics at the University of Dallas. Dan Fier enrolls
in the University of Minnesotas School of Engineering
this fall. Finally, proving himself his fathers son,
Niall ODonnell heads for Rome; there he will
begin work towards a Licentiate in Social Communications at
the Pontifical University of Santa Croce. Expect to hear more
of this class next year, as some other of its members mean
to begin graduate studies after a year of work.
