Career Planning

Clare BrattWhile it is true that liberal education is not judged by its "utility"-- knowledge that is truly liberal is an end in itself-- a liberal education is compatible with the pursuit of many careers. The College recognizes its duty to assist students in their preparation for a career, be it a career as a professional, or a "career" as a mother or as a religious. The Career Development Office exists to fulfill this responsibility.

A Christendom education equips students with many skills and assets employers find attractive. Trained to think, to reason, to analyze critically, and to communicate effectively, Christendom students find myriad opportunities in the professional world (click here or here for an interesting story on the value of a liberal arts education). And they find that their education has prepared them to succeed on the standardized tests which open the doors to law, business, medical, and graduate school. Among many other schools, alumni have pursued graduate studies at the Angelicum (Rome), Catholic University, the Dominican House of Studies, Fordham, the University of Notre Dame, St. Louis University, and the University of Virginia (Graduate School and School of Law).

Adam MarchandThe Career Development Office has a two-pronged strategy for career planning. The fall is "Career Exploration Semester." Guests representing different professional careers in government, the Church, and the private sector are invited to campus for open sessions with students. "Vocations Day" also occurs in the fall. This is a vocations fair, similar to a job fair, where representatives of dozens of religious orders visit campus to provide information for the students.

The second semester is "Job Placement Semester." The Office offers seminars on resume and cover letter writing, on interviewing, and on other job search-related topics. Students can turn to the Job Bank, which operates year-round and lists job openings and internship notices from all over the country as they come to the attention of the College.

Throughout the year, students may visit the office for a look at many reference books and directories; for individual counseling; for information on graduate work; or for a turn on the Career Mapper Inventory.
