College Blesses New Athletic Fields and Hosts First Annual Shield Rugby MatchApril 15, 2014
On April 12, Christendom College officially opened its new Crusader Athletic Fields with a blessing by college chaplain Fr. Donald Planty, followed by the first annual Shield Rugby Match against Franciscan University of Steubenville. The Christendom Crusaders fell just short of victory in a 23-26 game against the Division II Barons.
"The fan support for our team was amazing, as well as our students' charity and generosity towards our visitors from Franciscan," said athletic director Chris Vander Woude. "The Franciscan team, coaches, and visitors were all extremely impressed and very complimentary of their visit here and are anxious to show our team the same hospitality, when we travel to play them next year. It was a great opportunity for excellent competition, as well as mutual bonding by the two colleges, whom despite having differences, have much more in common. I hope this weekend continues to grow a strong relationship between the two colleges."
The Shield Match was the penultimate game in a big season for Crusader rugby. The team tied with Catholic University of American (19-19), defeated George Mason University (26-7), and also participated in the national Annual Cherry Blossom Rugby Tournament for the first time. The team will close their season on April 16 with a match against local rival Lord Fairfax Community College at 5 p.m. at 173 Skirmisher Lane, Middletown, VA 22645.
